Information about: Mexico Civil Unrest

On Tuesday, 24 February 2026, serious security incidents occurred across parts of the state, including in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. Authorities in Puerto Vallarta issued a public advisory to shelter in place. There may be transport and travel disruptions, including air travel. Criminal groups have set up roadblocks, and other roadblocks may be set up at short notice. Travellers should remain alert and follow the advice of the local authorities.
Security incidents have also been reported in other parts of Mexico, including Tamaulipas, Michoacan, Guerrero, and Nuevo Leon. Travellers should refer to official local authority channels for the latest safety information and directions.
As a general guide, impacted travellers should review their relevant travel insurance Product Disclosure Statement or Credit Card Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet for information regarding cancellation, travel delay, and additional travel expenses, as these will provide information around the cover under the policy. Including the terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and applicable sub‑limits that may apply.
Insurance is issued subject to the relevant Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) or Policy Information booklet and eligibility criteria. Your cover will depend on the type of plan you purchased or the type of cover you are eligible for and your individual circumstances and the circumstances of the claim. We will assess all claims in accordance with the cover that you hold and in accordance with the applicable Product Disclosure Statement or Credit Card Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet. The policy will only respond to this event if you are directly impacted, subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions of the applicable PDS or Policy Information Booklet There is no cover as a result of deciding not to travel where you are not directly impacted.
If you entered into a policy or became eligible for cover before (12:00am AEST) 24 February 2026.
If you are currently travelling:

- If your travel arrangements have been affected by this event, we firstly recommend contacting your travel agent or travel provider regarding the best option in altering your trip. Some travel providers may provide penalty free options to amend travel arrangements.
- If your pre-booked travel arrangements are cancelled, delayed or rescheduled as a result of the Mexico civil unrest and you have a travel insurance policy that provides coverage for delays or cancellation of travel arrangements, you may be able to claim for additional travel, accommodation and meal expenses, subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and applicable sub‑limits of your policy. Please ensure you keep all receipts and proof of purchases to submit with your claim.

If you have not yet departed:
- If your pre-booked travel arrangements are cancelled, delayed or rescheduled as a result of the Mexico civil unrest and you have a travel insurance policy that provides coverage for delays or cancellation of travel arrangements you may be able to make a claim for cancellation or rearrangement of your journey (whichever is the lesser), subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and applicable sub‑limits of your policy

If you entered into a policy or became eligible for cover on or after (12:00am AEST) 24 February 2026.
Your policy does not provide cover for events occurring prior to the date the policy is issued. As the Mexico civil unrest was first reported at 12:00am AEST on Tuesday 24 February 2026, there is generally no cover under any policies issued, or where eligibility commenced, on or after that time, subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and applicable sub‑limits of your policy. Further our policies do not cover claims for losses caused by something that you or a reasonable person in your circumstances would have been aware of at the time of purchasing your policy, responding to our questions or becoming eligible for cover
We will assess all claims in accordance with the cover that you hold and in accordance with your Product Disclosure Statement or Credit Card Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet.
Making a Claim
Keep all receipts for any additional transport, food or accommodation expenses you incur. If you are claiming cancellation or additional expenses you will need to submit documents showing what your original planned pre-paid arrangements were, along with any receipts and documents showing your new arrangements, and advice from the travel provider indicating the non-refundable portion of the journey.
Where possible, ensure any alternative accommodation and additional expenses are of a reasonable standard compared to the standard that which you had planned and pre-paid. Expenses must be reasonable and necessary in the circumstances.
Please note that any compensation and/or refunds you receive from a third party (e.g. airline) for transport, food or accommodation will be deducted from any payable amount if your claim is accepted.
